In-N-Out, nachos especial, boba, Roscoe’s

Posted in Uncategorized by Diana on January 14, 2010

I rave about the food and flavors that await the palate whenever travelers venture into California and ask where they should go eat. Without further delay, here are my 3 personal favorites, aka the foods I make sure to eat every time I am in Los Angeles:

*Note: the following are authentic, local, and fantastically inexpensive delights.

In-N-Out Burger

  • Order #1: Double-Double with onions
  • Substitute soda for strawberry shake
  • Best fast food burger joint

Carnitas Michoacan

  • Order the “Nachos Especial” and 2 tacos de carne asada
  • I usually get Orange Bang to drink
  • 1901 N Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90031 (Lincoln Heights, my old neighborhood)
  • local Mexican food
  • Check out the Yelp review (website unavailable)

boba (aka “bubble tea“)

  • boba are chewy black tapioca balls that are added to drinks (tea, coffee, fruit slushies)
  • popular boba cafes: Tapioca Express and Quickly
  • most abundantly available in Chinese suburban areas
  • boba may feel foreign in your mouth at first (but it’s like adding marshmallows in hot chocolate or toppings on ice cream)

Hmm…looks like I listed the three biggest cultures that influenced my childhood. Let’s add one more place to the plate:

Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles

  • Order 1/4 chicken prepared southern style, waffles, etc. and extra sides (i.e., macaroni and cheese)
  • I’ve been told you’re supposed to eat the chicken and waffle together in one bite. I’ve only eaten here once, but it’s a popular among locals
  • local Southern soul food

Welcome to my home city. Bon appetit!
