If we shirk the responsibility of self-awareness, we empower other people and circumstances to shape our lives for us. We live reactively to their scripts and not our own maps.

There’s this sense of community within PC. And I wholeheartedly believe it’s up to the Volunteer to make what s/he will of that community.

In a country with 200+ volunteers, I can confidently say that I can find a friend most anywhere in this country. Including some expats.

You come into PC thinking you’re giving up certain aspects of your “American” life for two years. You go through months of training. You live with host country nationals. You even befriend a few.

Here’s the thing: you don’t have to give up the best parts of that life. Friends are only a mobile phone’s call or text away. Sometimes a chat message away.

So much of life is about the community you build for yourself – the people you choose to surround yourself with, the experiences you choose to embark on, the goals and milestones you set for yourself to achieve.

There are times when you don’t know what you need. And all it takes is the company of a few Volunteers to make you realize what it was that was missing: companions.

Good friends are fabulous – they’re the companions you want keep for life. 🙂
