carpet haggling with polyglot friends

Posted in Uncategorized by Diana on March 17, 2011

Imagine this:

2 Asian girls, 1 white guy, and 1 Moroccan in a carpet store.

4-way bargaining for 2 carpets.

6 languages being spoken: English, Tashleheit, Arabic, French, Cantonese, Mandarin.

Moroccan sales guy is completely and utterly confused with what languages are being spoken. Yes, that’s right, my friends and I were communicating in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. I was communicating with the sales guy in Arabic, Tashleheit, and English. My friends were communicating with the sales guy in English and French.

We were creating quite the scene. The sales guy was so lost the entire time and, quite frankly, I could tell our languages put him at the disadvantage because he couldn’t understand a word of what we were saying about what we thought of the price he was quoting us vs. the price we were willing to pay.

Hip hip hooray for shopping with polyglot friends!
